How to Prevent Cargo Trailer Theft
Trailer theft is a common crime. Skilled pros can hook up a cargo trailer and disappear with it in a matter of seconds, so it’s important to take steps to deter and prevent trailer theft. Here are some theft prevention methods to help you turn your back on your parked cargo trailer with a little more peace of mind.
Why Are Cargo Trailers Such Attractive Targets?
While all kinds of trailers are at risk of theft, enclosed cargo trailers might be the most popular target. Thieves assume they hold something of value that might be hard to trace and easy to sell, such as a bunch of expensive tools. Sometimes they are after the trailer itself, and sometimes they will unload the trailer and abandon it.
The problem is exacerbated in some states by the fact that trailers do not require a license plate, so they are hard to trace. Many cargo trailers are not very distinctive looking, so they are hard to spot when they’re stolen.
Use Multiple Security Methods
There’s someone out there who has mastered overcoming just about every lock and security method, so using two or three different methods simultaneously is helpful. Many thieves are limited to one specialty, and every thief wants to do the job quickly and get going, so having multiple visible security methods goes a long way in deterring thieves.
Wheel Locks
A heavy-duty wheel lock is an excellent security measure. These are designed to keep the wheels from rolling and the trailer from moving. These come in a variety of models. Look for burly construction and a rubber coating to prevent damage to your tires.
Locking Lug Nuts
Thieves may target one component of a trailer instead of the whole thing, such as wheels or tires. Use locking lug nuts that make it challenging to remove the wheels. Remember, thieves want to work fast, so slowing them down can make all the difference.
Ball Hitch Locks
Install a ball hitch lock to prevent thieves from attaching the trailer to the hitch on a getaway vehicle.
Coupler Locks
If the coupler on your trailer is merely bolted to the frame, then you risk thieves removing it, replacing it, and towing your trailer away. If your trailer’s coupler is welded, you can padlock it, but this might not be adequate security. Instead, get a good coupler lock that covers the whole coupler with impervious steel.
Make Your Trailer Stand Out
If your trailer is distinctive, it’s less attractive to a thief because it’s easier to spot. Give it a colorful paint job or a huge business logo.
