Hot Weather Horse Trailer Tips
Much like a dog left in a hot car, a horse left in its trailer during warm weather is at serious risk for dehydration and heat stroke. Luckily, you can do a lot to mitigate these risks by simply taking the correct precautions. Use these tips from True Value Trailers & Power Equipment to keep your horse safe while traveling in hot weather.
Know the Signs of Overheating
Common signs that your horse is starting to overheat include excessive sweating, rapid heartbeat, and rapid breathing. Also look out for dehydration, usually signified by sunken eyes, lethargy, and a loss in skin elasticity. If you notice any of these signs, take action immediately.
Secure a Water Source
Horses are surprisingly sensitive to the taste and smell of what they consume. As the old saying implies, forcing your horse to drink from a source they find unpalatable can be very difficult. Try to start each trip with your horse hydrated, and bring along a supply of fresh potable water if possible.
Electrolytes and Ventilation
Much like humans, horses lose electrolytes when they sweat. Make sure that your horse has access to a salt lick or electrolyte water in addition to a non-electrolyte water source. You should also take steps to maximize the amount of ventilation your horse has. Open trailer vents and sliding windows as wide as possible. If your horse trailer has directional roof vents, maximize the air intake by opening them forward.
Check On Your Horse Frequently
Being stuck in a trailer for long periods of time can cause your horse distress. If you plan to go on a long trip, ease your horse into it by doing a series of shorter trips beforehand. You should also take the time to check up on your horse every once in a while. We recommend taking a twenty-minute break every four hours or so. This will give your horse a chance to relax and allow you to check them for signs of dehydration. If the trip extends for 12 hours or more, make sure that your horse gets enough overnight rest.
